Welcome to Diagnostic Radiology at Queen's University

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Queen’s University delivers advanced tertiary care imaging to a regional population of more than 600,000 people across Southeastern Ontario. As the region’s only tertiary referral centre, our broad catchment area provides exposure to a diverse and complex patient population across all imaging subspecialties.

Based at Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital, our department combines high-volume clinical service with a strong academic mission, supporting residency and fellowship training, research, and faculty development within a collaborative and supportive environment. Here are some highlights:

Early access to procedures and advanced imaging: Queen’s is a resident-centred training environment where trainees gain hands-on experience with advanced imaging and image-guided procedures early in residency, opportunities that may be reserved for more senior trainees or clinical fellows at other institutions.

Thrive in a close-knit academic community: Training within a single, integrated health sciences centre fosters strong collaboration. Residents, faculty, and staff work closely together in a supportive environment where learners are known, mentored, and valued.

One-to-one teaching and continuous feedback: We prioritize direct supervision at the workstation and in procedural settings, supported by a strong faculty-to-trainee ratio. With individual Academic Advisors and structured feedback, residents receive consistent mentorship as they build diagnostic and procedural confidence.

Diverse and complex clinical exposure: As the tertiary referral centre for Southeastern Ontario, Kingston offers a wide variety of complex cases across all radiological subspecialties, ensuring broad exposure and strong preparation for independent practice or fellowship training.

The Queen’s radiology program is a small, close-knit community with strong relationships between residents and staff. Over the five years, every staff member gets to know you well, which creates excellent mentorship opportunities. While each resident is paired with an academic advisor, you can easily approach any faculty member to discuss residency, career goals, research, or other concerns. The program also offers many opportunities beyond its comprehensive radiology training.
